Mallets Manor

In the civil parish of Cambridge.
In the historic county of Cambridgeshire and the Isle of Ely.
Modern Authority of Cambridgeshire.
1974 county of Cambridgeshire.
Medieval County of Cambridgeshire.

OS Map Grid Reference: TL48975730
Latitude 52.19360° Longitude 0.17753°

Mallets Manor has been described as a Fortified Manor House although is doubtful that it was such.

There are cropmark/slight earthwork remains.

Description

An earthworks survey for Madingley Hall diploma suggests the presence of earthworks and a defensive dyke at the possible Mallet's Manor site. The dyke is suggested to have become used as a hollow way. The manor houses (Mallet's & Uphall) are suggested to begin in the Norman period. A documentary study of the area is included. (Cambs HER)
Comments

The map reference given in the Cambs HER is the site of Up Hall Farm shown on the 1886 OS map but now housing. The VCH states Mallets manor was NE of the church. This may be a confused record where a pre-historic ditch and a non fortified manor house have been recorded as somehow related.

Minor archaeological investigations, such as watching brief reports, and some other 'grey' literature is most likely to be held by H.E.R.s but is often poorly referenced and is unlikely to be recorded here, or elsewhere, but some suggestions can be found here.
The possible site or monument is represented on maps as a point location. This is a guide only. It should be noted that OS grid references defines an area, not a point location. In practice this means the actual center of the site or monument may often, but not always, be to the North East of the point shown. Locations derived from OS grid references and from latitude longitiude may differ by a small distance.
Further information on mapping and location can be seen at this link.
